2020 Sobre Vista Chardonnay

This extraordinary Chardonnay from Sobre Vista Vineyard in Sonoma Mountain AVA offers more than a hat-tip to its sister in the north of Burgundy, Chablis. Like a Premier or Gran Cru, it is medium-bodied, bright with crisp acidity and very low alcohol, having been picked before the fires of 2020, thus avoiding any contact with smoke. It is complex showing notes of apple, pear and citrus; it displays mineral characteristics with a hint of salinity on the back of the palate, for a mouth watering complement to seafood or chicken. There is none of the big oaky butteriness one expects from California Chardonnay. This wine has been lightly barreled to fill out the mouthfeel, but has avoided the pitfalls of a typical oaky wine. For our first attempt at this varietal, it fulfills our intention of producing New World wines in Old World style. If you love a White Burgundy, this is a California Chardonnay for you.
